Fuelling Protection System as standard for all BMW diesel models

BMW is the first car manufacturer to equip all new diesel-powered
models with a system against incorrect fuelling (Fuelling Protection System) as
standard. The innovative system puts a stop to cases of mis-fuelling at the
petrol pump and its far-reaching consequences. A special mechanism fitted to
the filler neck prevents drivers from accidentally inserting the fuel filler
nozzle of a petrol pump into the filler neck of a diesel-powered car. This
technology has been tried-and-tested in a variety of BMW models with diesel
engines and will now be fitted to all diesel-powered BMW models ex work without
surcharge.

Every year, the German AA has to provide technical support in more than 5,000
cases of mis-fuelling. Rectifying the consequences of incorrect fuelling is not

the performance profile and acoustic insulation measures of modern diesel
engines reduce the differences between diesel and petrol-powered engines to a
hardly discernible minimum. The difference in fuel filler nozzle diameter often
prevents accidentally filling petrol engines with their narrower filler neck
with diesel fuel, but during hasty filling manoeuvres, the filler nozzle for
petrol can easily and mistakenly be inserted into the filler neck of standard
diesel models.

However BMW will help drivers to avoid making this mistake. The Incorrect
Fuelling Protection System fitted to all BMW diesel-powered models is designed
to allow only filler nozzles for diesel fuel to enter the filler neck. The
filler neck of these models is fitted with a locking system that can only be
released by a standardized diesel filler nozzle. A petrol nozzle with its
smaller diameter cannot make the same connection and this access is blocked.

The Incorrect Fuelling Protection System is also designed for fuelling under
exceptional circumstances, when the diesel-powered model may have to be fuelled
from a spare can. Narrow recesses on the outer walls of the filler neck allow
the introduction of smaller amounts of fuel. Using a container for re-fuelling
requires extra care, which serves to remind the driver of ensuring that they
use the right type of fuel.

World's first emission-free foundry


From 2010, BMW’s Landshut plant will boast the world’s first foundry with emission-free sand core production. The light-alloy foundry at the BMW plant is introducing a new sand core production method for gravity die-casting, whereby conventional organic binders will be replaced by highly eco-friendly inorganic binders, which generate virtually no pollutant emissions. The introduction of this innovative production method will allow the light-alloy foundry to reduce its emissions of combustion residues by 98 per cent. The plant will completely decommission its current waste air treatment systems by 2010.

The Landshut light-alloy foundry’s approximately 1,300 employees currently produce around 1.8 million aluminium and magnesium castings a year, with a total weight of 45,000 tonnes. The product range includes engine components such as cylinder heads and crankcases, structural components and chassis parts such as suspension strut supports, tailgate frames, corner castings and casting nodes for the front and rear axle.

Approximately half the castings produced are gravity die-cast using sand cores. The light-alloy foundry uses some 120 tonnes of sand daily in sand core production. 90 per cent of this volume is recycled. Following an initial pilot operation phase, the BMW Group is now poised to become the world’s first manufacturer to use inorganic sand cores in volume production of all engine core components. The inorganic binders used are based on water-soluble alkali silicates (i.e. a water/silica sand solution), resulting in significantly reduced resource consumption.

“Inorganic sand core production positions us at the forefront of the foundry industry,” says Dr Wolfgang Blümlhuber, head of the light-alloy foundry. “We see inorganic sand core production as key to competitive operation, particularly in highly industrialised countries with stringent environmental regulations, where manufacturing costs are correspondingly high.”

The light-alloy foundry first introduced this reduced-emission production process for use in the manufacturing of aluminium crankcases and cylinder heads for six-cylinder diesel engines. Now inorganic sand core production is gradually being extended to the foundry’s entire product range.

In addition to the environmental aspect, the process also has economic and ergonomic benefits. The strength of the resulting light-alloy components is enhanced by the improved, faster solidification of the liquid aluminium during the casting process, as it cools from a temperature of approximately 750º C. The BMW Group is using this light-but-strong design potential as a way of producing energy-saving, fuel-efficient engines capable of higher peak cylinder pressures and increased power density.

The Landshut light-alloy foundry’s employees benefit as well, due to substantially enhanced working conditions. Until now, the casting tools had to be blasted with dry ice after every use in order to remove combustion residues. This energy-intensive process can now be dispensed with.

To accompany the introduction of inorganic sand core production, the light-alloy foundry developed new core shooting tools and equipment. The casting equipment has become less complex, since the previously required venting systems can be dispensed with. At the same time, the cooling intensity during the casting process can be increased, thus reducing manufacturing cycle times by around 10 per cent. The simulation technology used in the process and tool development was developed at the BMW Landshut plant too.

“We will be able to fully amortise the investment in tools and equipment, along with our development costs, in the space of just a few years at most thanks to increased productivity, and thanks to savings on tool maintenance, tool and workshop air extraction systems and waste air treatment systems,” says Dr Wolfgang Blümlhuber, head of the BMW light-alloy foundry. Specifically, the productivity increase works out at around 10 per cent. Tool maintenance costs will be reduced by half.

One step closer to accident-free mobility.


The road-safety visions of society, politics, business and science haven now been clearly defined as "Vision Zero (Accident-Free Mobility)" and "Safety for All". The "Ko-FAS" (Cooperative Vehicle Safety) research initiative has set itself the goal of implementing these visions. It wants to make a contribution towards making accident-free mobility a reality. "In the future, maintaining safe conditions on the road will require extensive cooperation between road users. This interplay is bringing the Ko-FAS initiative one step closer to achieving its aim of accident-free mobility," says Dr. Ralph Rasshofer, member for the BMW Group in the steering committee of the Ko-FAS initiative.

The best-possible accident protection that an automobile manufacturer could provide motor vehicle drivers with is active safety. According to official statistics, less than two percent of accidents are caused by technical malfunctioning, while the vast majority occur as a result of human error. This means that it is important that the driver is afforded a maximum level of support behind the wheel, to prevent the circumstances that cause accidents from even occurring.

It is against this background that the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology launched the Ko-FAS research initiative on September 18, 2009. Its aim is to achieve a significant increase in road safety and an accompanying reduction in road accidents and motoring fatalities. This will necessitate finding ways of reliably mapping out the driving environment, with the aid of cooperative sensory and perceptive systems, conducting a comprehensive situational appraisal to draw up a precise assessment of collision risks, culminating in the activation of appropriate preventive protection measures.

The joint project involves 19 partners, comprising reputable vehicle manufacturers and parts suppliers, universities and institutes of applied sciences, as well as research institutes throughout the whole of Germany. A total budget of 25.5 million euros has been made available to the project partners for the duration of the project, which is scheduled to continue for just under four years.

serving to infinitely vary the otherwise symmetrical distribution of drive
forces when driving in a straight line.

The difference in forces potentially generated in this way of up to 1,800 Nm
provides a significant improvement of steering behaviour, steering precision,
tracking stability, and traction in general. At the same time the steering
responds even more directly and the driver is required far less often to
intervene in the steering, just as the electronic control systems are required
far less frequently to stabilise the car.

Suited for all engines and drivetrains.
The special highlight of this unique development by BMW is that for the first
time this system is able to actively distribute drive forces not only in the
overrun mode and with the clutch disengaged. As a result, Dynamic Performance
Control is suited for both standard and all-wheel drive.In all, therefore,
Dynamic Performance Control enhances not only active safety, agility and
motoring comfort, but also the joy of motoring through an even higher standard
of steering precision, tracking stability and traction. Precisely this is why
this innovative technology offers the customer genuine benefits in cars with
all engines, Dynamic Performance Control giving even the "average" driver
tangible benefits in everyday motoring at all speeds and helping him control
his car in superior and safe style. Hence, sheer driving pleasure becomes an

Low weight of just 8 grams, the slender microphone arm and precisely-fitting earplugs in various sizes guarantee superior wearer comfort also during lengthy periods of use. The rechargeable battery integrated in the headsets allows maximum use of up to five hours and a stand-by time of up to 7 days. The headsets come complete with a charge adapter to be connected to the car’s power socket or, alternatively, to the cigar lighter.

Use of the headsets is largely intuitive through a button for the incoming call, end-of-call, and re-dial functions. A second button serves to control the level of volume, with speech and reception volume being adjusted automatically to surrounding conditions as a function of the noise level. A voice selection function allows direct access to the address directory in mobile phones supporting this function. In that case all the driver has to do is speak out the name of the person he wishes to call into the microphone on the headset in order to select the number desired.

Via Bluetooth, the driver may even use the headset at the same time in combination with two mobile phones, switching spontaneously as he wishes from one mobile phone to another, depending on where a call is coming in.

The History of BMW


Although BMW's current fame and reputation as one of the greatest automobile manufacturers can be mostly linked to models produced in the last two decades, the history of the marque stretches back almost 90 years and contains numerous achievements that have established it as a benchmark.

The origins of BMW trace back to 1913 when Karl Friedrich Rapp, a Bavarian who had been a well-known engineer in a German aircraft company, formed Rapp Motoren Werke in a suburb of Munich. The company specialized in airplane engines however Rapp found that they were problematic and suffered from excessive vibration. Nearby, Gustav Otto, also an airplane specialist, set up his own shop, Gustav Flugmaschinefabrik, building small aircraft.

Because of the faulty engines, Rapp Motoren Werke secured a contract with Austro-Daimler, who was unable to meet its demands, to build V12 Aero engines under license. The company expanded too quickly, however, and by 1916 Rapp resigned from the company because of financial troubles. In his place Franz Josef Popp and Max Friz, two Austrians, took over the company. In March that same year, Rapp Motoren Werke merged with Gustav Flugmaschinefabrik to form Bayersiche Flugzeungwerke. It was shortly afterwards renamed Bayersiche Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works), or BMW, forming the company we know today.

In 1917, BMW's first aircraft engine went into production, the 6 cylinder Type IIIa. In 1919, using an aircraft powered by its successor, the Type IV, Franz Zeno Diemer set an altitude record of 9,760 metres (32,013 ft). After the Treaty of Versailles was signed in the same year, prohibiting BMW from building aircraft engines, production switched to air brakes for railway cars. When BMW started once again to build aircraft engines in 1922, no fewer than 29 world records in aviation were set with them. The current BMW logo, introduced in 1920, was based on the circular design of an aircraft propeller.

The first BMW motorcycle, the R 32, went into production in 1923 at the newly constructed Eisenach factory next to the Munich airport of the day. The R 32 used a flat-twin engine transversely mounted in a double-tubular frame producing 8.5 horsepower at 3300 rpm. The 2-cylinder 494cc motorcycle could reach a top speed of 59 mph (95 km/h). BMW manufactured 3090 of them during its 3 year life span.

It was 1928 that made history in terms of the BMW car. Produced at the Eisenbach factory, the Dixi 3/15 PS marked the beginning of BMW automobile production. It was built under license from Austin and was essentially the same model as the US Bantam and the Japanese Datsun. The first Dixis used an open roof and were powered by a 743cc 4 cylinder engine producing 15 horsepower. Top speed was in the neighbourhood of 50 mph (80 km/h). In 1929 a new improved version was launched, the DA2, which employed an all-steel body and 4-wheel brakes, and in 1930 the Dixi scored its first wins in motor racing. Total production: 18,976 units.
